Greece offers an ideal setting for digital nomads, combining modern infrastructure, a pleasant climate, and a high quality of life. The growing possibility of remote work has transformed the way professionals choose where to live and operate.
In this context, Greece has emerged as an attractive destination for digital nomads—professionals seeking to combine flexible remote work with security, quality living, and access to the European Union. To support this, Greece offers a residence permit specifically designed for remote workers, as introduced under New Immigration Law. This permit allows foreign nationals who work remotely for companies or clients outside Greece to legally reside in the country.
Eligibility and Entry Conditions
The residence permit for Digital Nomads can be granted to those who:
- Entered Greece with a National Entry Visa (Digital Nomad Visa – Type D)
- Entered with a Uniform Visa (Type C)
- Entered with a passport stamp, in the case of Citizens of “Visa-free” countries
Basic Requirements and documentation
To apply for the Digital Nomad residence permit, you must provide:
- Valid Passport – Its validity must extend at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen Member States, must contain at least 2 blank pages and must have been issued within the previous 10 years.
- Proof of Entry into Greece – Passport stamp or Digital Nomad Visa.
- A solemn declaration stating your intention to reside in Greece with a national entry visa for remote work and confirming that you will not provide work, services, or projects to any employer based in Greece. We will prepare this document for you upon your arrival in Greece.
- Proof of sufficient financial resources, amounting to a minimum net income of €3,500 per month, in accordance with current legislation.
- Application Form for Residence Permit – Submitted online via the Decentralized Administration of your choice of residence.
- Proof of Remote Work – Depending on your employment status:
If you are employed by a company located outside of Greece, please provide information about the company, including its name, registered office, field of activity, corporate purpose, and proof of its active and current operation. This can include a registration from the General Commercial Registry (or its equivalent in the company’s country of origin), information from the company’s website, or other publicly available sources.
If you are self-employed in your own business based outside of Greece (as I suppose is the case), please provide information about your status within the company, as well as details regarding the company’s name, registered office, field of activity, and corporate purpose. Like the above, this should include registration in a service equivalent to the General Commercial Register in the company’s country of origin, along with data from the company’s website or other public sources.
- Proof of residence in Greece (e.g., a lease agreement or property ownership contract).
- An insurance policy from a private insurance company that includes coverage for permanent total or partial disability due to an accident, with a minimum coverage of €15,000.
- Government Fee – €1,000 administrative fee for initial issuance.
Competent authority and evaluation period
The application for the Digital Nomad residence permit is submitted online via the Decentralized Administration of your choice of residence. The review process can take several months. Until then, if the basis requirements of your application are met, you will receive a residence permit application certificate as proof of your legal stay until the final decision is issued. Once approved, you will receive your residence permit.
Validity and Renewal
The initial residence permit is valid for 2 years and can be renewed on a 3-year basis, if all initial conditions continue to be met.
Employment Restrictions
This permit does not grant the right to work for Greek-based employers or to engage in independent economic activity within Greece.
Family Members
The residence permit may be extended to family members of the primary applicant. Each family member receives an individual residence permit, which expires at the same time as the main permit. Sufficient financial resources must be demonstrated either individually or collectively to support all family members.
